What the fastest fire evacuation I've ever witnessed taught me about investing in accessibility.

Last week, I witnessed something remarkable. A group of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, many with significant mobility challenges, completed a fire evacuation in 40 seconds. It was the fastest evacuation ever recorded for this group.

At The Guild’s annual awards ceremony in May, Dr. Susan Connors received a special honor for her service to the organization as a Board member, physician, parent, and advocate. Before certificates were presented to adult residents at The Guild for progress on their goals, CEO Amy Sousa spoke about Sue's impact.

The Guild for Human Services recently elected Peg Doherty of Sudbury to its Board of Trustees. A longtime advocate for high-quality disability services, Peg brings decades of operational, clinical, and human-services leadership to this role.

Peg’s career spans senior leadership positions in ambulatory care, home health, and hospice organizations. Most recently, she worked in a large multisite and multispecialty ambulatory practice within Mass General Brigham.

ANCOR is a national association of community-based service providers that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

CARF International announced that The Guild for Human Services has been accredited for a period of three years for its youth and adult residential programs. The latest accreditation is the second consecutive Three-Year Accreditation that the accrediting body, CARF International, has awarded to The Guild.

On Monday, May 25, a man died right before our eyes.  He died in real time and on instant replay, over and over and over again.  He died not of a heart attack, a car accident or old age.  He died under the knee of a person, of four people, who swore an oath to protect him.

George Floyd was an African American man who had two daughters, several jobs, and countless friends.  He was one in a long line of men and women of color who have died under a knee, at the barrel of a gun or swinging from a tree in a “free” country. 

The Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN) announced that The Guild for Human Services’ Leadership Employee Advancement and Development (LEAD) program has been selected as a finalist for their 2023 Nonprofit Excellence Awards in the Innovation category.
