Medical Care

You will be pleased to learn that your student, whether a day or residential student, will have the medical assistance and support of our professional nursing staff. Our Director of Health Services and our nursing staff are skilled in the care of students with medically complex needs. While with us, your student will be assigned a nursing case manager who knows your student’s medical history and any specific health care needs. Nursing staff work school hours and beyond to ensure full coverage for our residential students as well. Coverage is as follows:

  • On-duty nursing is available weekdays from 9AM– 9 PM and weekends from 9AM– 5 PM

  • On-call nursing is available 24 hours every day, 365 days per year.

If your student is placed at The Guild residentially, all needed medical services with health practitioners are coordinated by nurse case managers. Your student will be accompanied to dental and medical appointments unless you prefer to take them on your own. Or, you may choose to meet your student and our staff at the doctor’s, dentist’s, or specialist’s office to participate directly in your student’s health care appointment.

During the school day, our nurses will give your student medications as prescribed. During residential hours, our well-trained residential staff will obtain your student’s medications from locked medical storage areas and will administer per state regulated protocols. Additionally, every staff member at The Guild is trained in First Aid, Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and Epi-Pens.

To supplement the excellent care your residential student gets from our nursing staff, The Guild has partnered with medical and psychiatric consultants. Many of these medical services such as Primary Care, Neurology, Psychiatry and Dental Care are able to be provided on-site. We have learned that many of our students do better when medical services are provided to them in the familiar school environment by medical personnel who specialize in working with individuals with intellectual impairments. However, because not all services are able to be provided on site, we have partnered with several community providers to ensure that Guild students receive comprehensive medical services.
